THE POWER OF THE YOUTHS
THE POWER OF THE YOUTHS
The youth characterize more than half of a society’s population. They are agile and strong. They have the duty of upholding the society’s values and passing them on from generation to generation. Power, on the other hand is the ability to do something, anything and everything. Having said this, we should ask ourselves, who are the youths?
We are the youths. We have great potentials which most of the time we do not make good use of and allow to waste. Ours is a generation of colossal possibilities and opportunities. Our generation owns the facilities that make the world better. The internet, the washing machines, the dish washers, the pounding machines...the list is endless. We can be likened to bees. Bees sting and produce one of the best sources of sweet to us- honey. Therefore, the power we have as youths must not be underemphasized.
Note that we are powerful agents change. With the power we have as youths, we can create and nurture great ideas which the world needs to move forward. A developing continent like Africa with Nigeria as its giant has untapped human and natural resources. Science says nobody on Planet Earth has been able to use up to 10% of the brain God has disposed us with. So what exactly is the problem? What drags back our development? Why do we use our power in so much negative ways that it affects generations to come?
As youths, we are not children neither are we full grown adults yet. Therefore, we cannot fully know the nitty-gritty of everything that we do. We listen to that tiny voice in our heads and hope that what we have done is right. This is why it is very easy to make mistakes at this stage and easy as well for the right decisions to blossom like a flower. This is due to the degree of enthusiasm, burning desire and energy that go through our body systems. If all these are channelled towards good things, the result is overwhelmingly great and no other age group can achieve it.
However, when we channel our power to wrong things such as using our internets to download pornographic images and videos, songs of little or no value, using our phones to send erotic messages and the likes, the outcome is disastrous as the explosion o f a grenade. Drug abuse is also on the increase as a result of some of those we pick as role models. ‘Celebrity K is doing it, it’s cool and I should do it’, is a wrong notion. When we do this, we push our power down the abysmal hole of destruction.
We are pollen grains which the wind can carry anywhere as far as possible. We are butterflies which have carefully passed through the developmental stages and have emerged as a beautiful sight to behold. We are gold that has gone through over 1000 degrees of heat and are now precious all over the world. We are diamonds which started out as coal and now, one of the most precious stones in the world. We are like fire, like dynamite which explodes at the prime of time.
Sometimes, we kill our power due to lack of self esteem which is usually caused by peer pressure. Segun is mocked by his peers as being too ‘holy’, so he decides to start engaging in drugs to make him a bit ‘high’ which he believes will put him ‘among’ his peers. Is that the solution to his problem?
‘The youths are the backbone to the nation’, I read once. Shall we let the body of the society down? We should understand that responsibility is key and it is pertinent to the development of the Earth. Don’t forget your creator; He is sure to help you. The Good Book says, ‘Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth’.
So as you wake up each morning, look into the mirror and say to yourself, ‘I am the best of my kind, too important to be ignored and too precious to be wasted. I am beautifully and wonderfully made. I was carefully selected and I refuse to use my power negatively’. Do not forget to help those around you who are gradually losing their self esteem to the pressure around them. Remember, we are the change the world needs.
